Abstract

The current study examined how marital quality prior to the onset of dementia and marriage duration influenced caregivers¡¯ stress appraisals, well-being, and life quality. In a sample of 88 spousal caregivers, multiple regression analyses showed that the level of marital quality prior to the onset of dementia was a predictor of caregivers¡¯ stress appraisals. Spousal caregivers, specifically, who reported higher levels of marital quality prior to the onset of dementia, were likely to show higher levels of role captivity. On the other hand, duration of marriage did not effect on caregivers¡¯ role captivity. Finally, the level of marital quality prior to the onset of dementia was a moderator for the relationship between caregiving stressors and caregiving outcomes(i.e. caregivers¡¯ stress appraisals, well-being, and life quality). The findings of this study suggest that interventions for helping spouses to provide care to the demented elderly at home must consider circumstances faced by caregiving spouses such as marital quality prior to the onset of dementia.
